This year for Christmas, my daughter Abby got me the DVD “Julie and Julia.” It’s the story of an aspiring writer and home cook named Julie Powell who decides to cook her way through Julia Child’s famous cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in a year’s time and to write a daily blog about it. The movie also chronicles Julia Child’s early years as she was breaking into the culinary world before she became “The French Chef.
The movie appealed to me on a number of different levels. It’s about cooking, so of course I was bound to love it. I also enjoyed learning about Julia Child and how she got her start. I also liked how Julie Powell took her cooking experiences and turned them into a blog, which eventually landed her a book deal. What I liked about Julie’s blog idea is that it gave her readers a chance to interact with her on a more personal level by leaving their comments on her blog. Plus, she didn’t have to worry about her blog posts being too long because on a blog, you can write as much or as little as you want.
I was informed last week of the new Argus policy that now my columns can’t be any longer than 350 words. I’ve struggled in the past to keep them within the specified lengths I’ve had to work with but now, honestly, I don’t think I can write a good column within the new word limitations. So, I’m following Julie Powell’s example and starting my own blog. I’ll write at least once a week and put my posts out on Sunday. I’ll also have unlimited space to put recipes, which really excites me.
Thank you to Sean Hart who gave me the space in his Lifestyle section and thank you to all the readers who have followed my column over the past year. I hope you’ll follow me to my blog.
