Although I certainly enjoy trying new restaurants and new foods while I'm away on a business trip, after three or four days of restaurant food I find myself longing for my own kitchen and the satisfaction of cooking my own food.
I got home late Thursday night and Friday was spent sleeping the day away but today I was back full force and ready to hit the kitchen. It was such a nice day today (sunny skies and in the 60s) I decided to fire up the grill for my first official meal of Spring. Nothing fancy, just a nice marinated elk steak, some home made mashed potatoes and a simple salad of greens, cucumbers and tomatoes (the tomatoes were so expensive I felt like the cashier should have been wearing a bank robber's mask when she told me my total). Since I was also celebrating the arrival of Spring, I pulled a bottle of Home Grown 2007 Family Harvest Red from my wine rack. Home Grown's tag line on the bottle is "Even Elvis wore shirts his mother made. Life tastes better when it's Home Grown." I thought that was kinda clever and quirky. The Family Harvest Red is a blend (1/3 each) of Syrah, Barbera and Petit Sirah and I've heard it compared to the Ménage á Trois Red. After enjoying a glass of Home Grown, I have to say that my allegiance is still with Ménage á Trois. While Home Grown Red was certainly acceptable and I wouldn't have any problems with enjoying another bottle, I have to say that to me, it tasted a little "thin" (although I'm not sure that's an actual wine description) or maybe "young" is a better word. Still, hats off to the folks at Home Grown. It's nice to see a company that doesn't appear to take itself too seriously and wants to have fun with the wine they produce. I mean, how can you not like a company that writes in its Flavor Profile that their wine tastes like a "sweaty saddle" or "a roll in the hay"?
